The Decatur City Council has voted to approve two incentives for green building as part of the City’s effort to increase its certification level for the Atlanta Regional Commission’s Green Communities program.

Construction permits that include any of the following components will be eligible for expedited permitting and public recognition:

  • Green building certifications (LEED, EarthCraft, ENERGY STAR)
  • Affordable and workforce housing facilities certified as EarthCraft House, EarthCraft Multifamily, ENERGY STAR, or LEED for Homes
  • Solar energy for new construction projects
  • Watersense certification for new homes

Permit requests that include green building components will be given priority over those that do not.  Once all required documentation has been submitted, the project will move to the top of the plan review list.  Expedited plan review is contingent upon the availability of the building official and building inspector.  Eligible projects will be given priority in the order received.

Projects deemed by the Planning Director as positive examples of green building may receive special recognition, including features in the City’s newsletter and on its website, recognition at the Decatur Old House Fair or at the annual Decatur Design Awards.
