Have you received a letter in the mail asking you to pay for a copy of your official deed? Unfortunately, new homeowners are receiving these letters. You do NOT need to pay to receive your official deed. You will receive the original deed from the closing attorney after the deed is recorded. If you need another copy, you can simply print a copy from the county website or request one for the courthouse.

Here’s what to look out for if you are unsure the letter is a scam:

  • It may say “Official Letter” from the county Register of Deeds or Clerk of Court.
  • It may be stamped “Official” or Official Business,” and may even say “Urgent Attention Needed.”
  • The letter will say the new homeowner urgently needs to get a copy of their deed and requests payment for the official copy.

When in doubt, ask your realtor or lawyer!
